OER Solutions: Enhancing Learning, Maximizing Resources

The 2010 NROC Member Meeting in Monterey, CA, included workshops, interactive presentations, roundtable discussions, and hands-on sessions covering topics ranging from federal funding opportunities to NROC implementation strategies. View the meeting archives below for results from each of the meeting sessions. You may also add to the conversation by clicking the “Add comment” link at the bottom of each session page. (A) Member Showcase

What: The Member Showcase includes Institutional Profiles which were posted on wall charts around the main meeting venue. Members brought additional information and wrote notes on the charts throughout the meeting to share more about their projects. View the session blog for a list of topics raised by participants for discussion with others in the NROC Network.

(B) MITE/NROC Project Update

What: Gary Lopez, Executive Director of MITE,  provides the annual NROC project update, highlighting performance on mission, activities, membership growth, progress towards sustainability, and new course projects.

(C) The Great Debate: Quality Doesn’t Matter — Does It?

What: A lively debate and discussion about definitions, guidelines and the very concept of "quality" in OER, online courses and content. Many are concerned about the need for quality and quality guidelines in online education and OER, yet there is no common definition of what quality is in teaching and learning.  Debated by: Myk Garn, SREB and Barry Dahl, Lake Superior College, MN. Mediated by John Watscon, Evergreen Education Group.

(D) Learning from Global OER Efforts

Reflections on Quality, Professional Development and Sustainability in Education

What: Highlights of significant reflections derived from international open content experiences pertaining to quality, professional development and maximizing return on our collective OER investment. "Working together in building sustainable OER ecosystems at an international level, we can achieve far more than working alone."  With guest presenter Wayne Mackintosh, Director, International Centre for Open Education, Otago Polytechnic, New Zealand. (F) Trends and Issues in Managing Online Programs

What: Discussion of two cases regarding the adaption of NROC content to meet local needs. Facilitated by Carrie Bisgard, Sierra Vista High School, CA, and Tim Tirrell, Montana State University at Billings.

(G) Roundtable 2. Rethinking Credit Recovery

What: A discussion with members who have adapted NROC/OER content towards supporting solutions for students who need "credit recovery" to graduate from high school. Facilitated by Mary Schlegelmilch, Omaha Public Schools and Scott Vashaw, Michigan Virtual High School.

(L) Federal Stimulus and OER: An Update

What: Learn more about the status of federal programs available to advance OER in education and share your experiences to date. Presented by Susan Patrick, iNACOL.

(M) Wrap-Up: Emergent projects

What: Discuss and organize follow-up on project ideas that have critical mass and support to move forward among NROC Members.

(N) Workshop: Federal Stimulus Funds for OER

What: A presentation and discussion about collaborative opportunities within the NROC Network for making the most of federal stimulus funding for OER. Topics include grant writing tips, collaborative strategies, copyright and distribution concerns, curriculum development guidelines, technical considerations for creating sharable content, quality assurance and maintenance tools, tips for hiring development partners and more.

Actions: Connect with colleagues and MITE through the NROC Network to strategize, share experiences and coordinate activities related to Federal Stimulus and OER projects. Include model guidelines and specifications from NROC in your development projects - for courses and professional development -- to facilitate help raise quality outcomes and ensure interoperability. Share ideas and other resources by adding your comments.
